My New Series

I realize that my blogs have been more about the art of writing rather than my thoughts about writing, but I don't want to bore you with the boringness of day-to-day writing life. Mainly, it consists of revisions and waiting to hear back from publishers. The day-to-day excitement of turning "happy" into "glad," deleting adverbs, and hitting refresh on the inbox does not a good blog make.

I also realize that much of the stuff I have put on the website isn't really up to par. You see, if I publish a story on-line, I can only sell the reprint rights, because if it's been published on-line, it's been published. And so many magazines are looking for exclusives that they won't purchase already-published stories. So, the really good stuff I have is sitting out at publishing sites as we speak, waiting to see if someone will pick it up and print it. Meanwhile, the stories I have published on here are stories that won't have a market (like "Old Soldier") or ones that really aren't strong enough to get published elsewhere (like "The Fortune"). That's not to say that they're bad; it's like saying that I recognize when something is Direct-to-DVD instead of trying to sell it in theaters.

But I have had a story idea I've been playing around with in my head and now, and I decided that rather than write it as a novel, I would write it as a series of short, episodic stories here on the site. I've got this idea for characters and a situation, and you can join me as I see where it goes.

And along the way, you can see my process. You can see the first draft, you can see suggestions people have, and I'll show you the revisions I make in response to those. You'll get to be the first reader, and you'll see this project from the start.

And since this is a pet project of mine, and as it's a story I feel strongly about, I'm giving it my "A" game. I absolutely love these characters, and I am sure you will too.

Join me in the next few days with Foe and Dart and their adventures as "Pilots of Convenience."
